Teflon (PTFE) Impregnation
PTFE impregnation of anodized aluminum and electroless nickel coatings to reduce friction, improve corrosion resistance, and provide non-stick surface properties for demanding aerospace and industrial applications.
Teflon (PTFE) impregnation is a post-treatment process applied to porous coatings — primarily Type II and Type III anodize on aluminum, and electroless nickel — to fill the pores of the coating with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). The result is a composite surface that combines the hardness and corrosion resistance of the base coating with the low friction and non-stick properties of PTFE.
For anodized aluminum, PTFE impregnation significantly reduces the coefficient of friction, making the surface suitable for sliding contact applications such as actuator components, valve bodies, and bearing surfaces. The impregnation also seals the anodic pores, improving corrosion resistance beyond what is achievable with conventional hot water or dichromate sealing.
When applied over electroless nickel, PTFE impregnation produces a composite coating with excellent wear resistance, low friction, and outstanding corrosion resistance. This combination is widely used in aerospace hydraulic components, food processing equipment, and chemical handling applications where both wear and corrosion resistance are required.
